Six Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your AC

Even well-maintained air conditioning systems have a functioning lifespan. Depending on the quality of the unit, the regularity of maintenance, and the frequency of use, most AC systems last 10-20 years. In hotter, more humid climates, systems tend to last shorter periods. 

These are the six most common signs you may be ready for a new AC, mini-split, or heat pump: 

1. Poor performance – Worn-out and malfunctioning ACs and heat pumps don’t cool as consistently or efficiently as they once did. If you notice warm air coming from vents after your AC unit or heat pump runs for a few minutes, it requires a professional inspection. 
2. Insufficient airflow – Older units may not consistently circulate air to all parts of the home, resulting in hot or cold spots and higher energy bills. 
3. Frequent cycling – Also known as short-cycling, this occurs when the AC or heat pump turns on and off constantly, often for just a few minutes at a time. Frequent cycling adds wear and tear, increases energy expenses, and fails to keep your home comfortable. 
4. Structural issues – Whenever you spot physical damage to an AC or heat pump, or hear odd sounds and humming (often caused by structural issues), call the pros. Common problems include corrosion, water leaks, exposed wiring, and damaged or obstructed vents and coils. 
5. Constant repairs – If your AC system requires frequent spot-fixes, it’s time to make a change. Replace the AC instead of relying on repeated service calls to keep your home cool.
6. Higher energy bills – Older AC units are less efficient than today’s models and may use even more energy as they age due to worn parts. If you notice a spike in our energy bill, it might be time for an AC upgrade!
